Colleges for Developing Space Settlement Skills
spreading life throughout the solar system
If you are interested in a college education that will help prepare you
for space colonization work, consider the following universities.
- University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona. The Department of Planetary Sciences and Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
Planetary science includes the study of the nine planets in our Solar System, of course, but the intellectual boundaries of planetary science extend far beyond the orbit of Pluto.
- UC Berkeley Berkeley, California.
UC Berkeley has many unique and exciting educational opportunities in the space sciences, astrophysics, planetary sciences, space engineering, and science education. The objective of the program is to recruit and train professionals, especially women and underrepresented minorities, for careers in space science, aerospace engineering, and allied fields
- California Polytechnic State
University offering the CubeSat program. The CubeSat program creates launch opportunities for schools previously unable to access space. Here is a list of the CubeSat Developers.
- Cal Tech. Pasadena, California.
The Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory, the Karman Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Jet Propulsion, and the Firestone Flight Sciences Laboratory together form the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories, widely known as GALCIT. In this complex are housed the Applied Mathematics group, the Jet Propulsion Center, and the Hydrodynamics Laboratories, as well as the various disciplines making up the broad field known as Aeronautics.
- University of Colorado (Boulder, Colorado).
The mission is to prepare students for exciting leadership positions in the design, implementation and operation of aerospace systems. We achieve this through the excellence of the education we provide, and the excellence we demonstrate in basic and applied research.
The undergraduate "Curriculum 2000" addresses critical needs of the aerospace industry and prepares students for advanced degree programs. The fundamentals of aerospace engineering are emphasized through hands-on learning and experimental laboratory work in every required course. This has a particular emphasis on aerospace product design. Students also practice professional teamwork and communication skills nearly every day, in every class.
The graduate program capitalizes on our strengths in satellite applications, space and geophysical sciences, remote sensing and GPS technologies, computational structural analysis, deployable space structures, active and distributed control, space flight payload design, bioastronautics, and uninhabited aero-vehicle systems technology.
- International Space University Alsace, France.
The International Space University provides graduate-level training to the future leaders of the emerging global space community at its Central Campus in Strasbourg, France, and at locations around the world. In its two-month Summer Session and one-year Masters program, ISU offers its students a unique Core Curriculum covering all disciplines related to space programs and enterprises – space science, space engineering, systems engineering, space policy and law, business and management, and space and society. Both programs also involve an intense student research Team Project providing international graduate students and young space professionals the opportunity to solve complex problems together in an intercultural environment.
- University of Michigan Aero. Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Aerospace technology has grown out of the problems of design, construction, and operation of vehicles that maneuver above the Earth's surface. These vehicles range from ground-effect machines and helicopters to aircraft and spacecraft. Design of such vehicles has always been challenging, not only because of the requirement that they operate in a hostile environment, but also because of the high premium placed on light weight, high efficiency and great reliability.
- MIT. Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Founded in 1965, the Center for Space Research (CSR) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an interdepartmental center that supports research in space science and engineering, astronomy and astrophysics. CSR plays a leading role in the design, construction and utilization of instruments placed aboard space vehicles launched by NASA or other agencies. The Center's projects draw upon the interests and expertise of scientists and engineers from several MIT departments, thus affording a wide array of opportunities for both students and faculty. Experimental programs are supplemented by closely related programs of ground-based research, by theoretical investigations, and by laboratory development of instrumentation for space-based and ground-based experiments.
- University of North Dakota. Grand Forks, North Dakota.
UND's Space Studies Department is unique not only in the United States, but in the world as well. Even though a number of universities offer degrees in space sciences and engineering, no other institution in the United States awards a Masters Degree that combines space science, management, technology, law, policy, and life science. The next generation of Space Program decision-makers will need the expertise presented by this program to oversee future space achievements. While astronauts, engineers, and scientists will continue to provide the technical craft to accomplish space goals, knowledgeable managers with broader backgrounds that link policy, business, law, science and technology will decide what those goals should be and how to implement them. NASA, the military, education, and the commercial segments of the American and international space programs need our Space Studies graduates who will be well prepared to participate, lead, and guide the transition from the exploration of space to its routine use.
- SpaceMaster. Europe.
An International multidisciplinary collaboration between a number of European universities. this is a two year masters program in space science and technology.
- Standford University. Stanford, California
Stanford's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics prepares students for professional positions in industry, government, and academia through a comprehensive program of graduate teaching and research. In this broad program, students have the opportunity to learn and integrate multiple engineering disciplines. The program emphasizes structural, aerodynamic, guidance and control, and propulsion problems of aircraft and spacecraft.
- University of Wisconsin-Madison. Madison, Wisconsin
Graduate research center specializing in developing new observing tools for spacecraft, aircraft, and ground-based platforms.
